My top purchase of the year: a compact mechanical keyboard

A Writer’s Essential Tool

As a dedicated writer, I take my writing tools seriously. While I wouldn’t spend a staggering $3,600 on a keyboard, typing on a MacBook for long periods leaves much to be desired. This past spring, I began exploring options for a distraction-free writing environment, which led me to consider an e-reader and a mechanical keyboard.

Choosing the Right Keyboard

After thorough research, I opted for the NuPhy Air60 V2 paired with the Boox Palma 2. The Air60 V2 features tactile Moss switches and comes in a striking “nostalgic tan” color, which is actually a vibrant yellow. While I’m not a mechanical keyboard expert, I find the typing experience on the Air60 V2 quite enjoyable.

  • Low-profile keys enhance portability.
  • Moss switches provide a satisfying sound without being overly loud.
  • Can be connected to three devices seamlessly.

Writing on the Go

I often take the Air60 with me during quiet nights when I’m bartending. If I need to use my laptop, the design allows it to fit perfectly over a MacBook keyboard, ensuring easy access to the trackpad. More frequently, I bring along the Palma 2, as the NuFolio serves as both a keyboard cover and a stand, creating a compact writing setup that’s ideal for when I want to avoid the internet.

Rediscovering Fiction

Sometimes, I use this setup at home as well. After nearly two decades, I resumed writing fiction and installed Obsidian on the Palma. Combined with the Air60, it became my preferred writing combination. As someone who often uses timers to maintain focus, this setup significantly helps my concentration. The tactile feedback from the Air60 is a refreshing change from typical laptop keyboards.

Room for Improvement

While the 64-key layout is great for travel, it can feel a bit cramped, leading to more typing errors than I experience on larger keyboards. Additionally, the shallow angle may not be comfortable for extended periods at a desk, yet it works wonderfully with a standing desk or while resting on my lap.

Initially, I hesitated to invest in the NuPhy due to my limited budget after a year of unemployment. However, nine months later, it has become an essential aspect of my writing routine. For more information, visit mesadecentro.net.
