
Two people were killed and many other wounds when a man led a car in a lunch crowd in the southwestern German city of Mannheim on Monday, the authorities said.
The driver is a 40 -year -old German citizen, the interior minister of the state of Baden Württemberg, Thomas Strobl told the DPA to the interior minister
The police arrested the man, who was not publicly appointed, immediately after the event and said he believed he was the only person involved. The police did not say if they believed that the accident had been deliberated.
Other details on the driver, who was taken to the hospital, were not released. The police didn’t say how many people had been injured.
The authorities asked people to avoid the city center on Monday.
Numerous recent escape attacks had put the Germans at the limit of the national elections last month.
Two weeks ago, a 24 -year -old Afghan man who was looking for Asilo intentionally guided in a trade union event in Munich, killing a 2 -year -old boy and his mother and injuring several dozens of others.
And in December, a Saudi doctor who had lived in Germany for more than a decade has been accused of driving his car in a Christmas market in the central city of Magdeburg, killing six people and injuring hundreds of others.
These attacks, by immigrants or residents of foreign origin, raised questions about home security and immigration policy before the elections, in which the right -wing alternative for the Germany party had its best presentation ever.
There have also been numerous attacks of vehicles in recent years as authors of German origin. Five years ago, a man who lived in his car approached a crowd in Torier, killing four. In 2018, a man with a story of psychological problems pounded his van in a crowd in Münster, in the west of the country, killing two.
In Mannheim, according to what was reported, the driver entered a pedestrian stretch of the city center from his historical water tower and led about 700 IARDE to the square known as ParadePlatz. The accident occurred at about 12:15 pm, according to the police, when the crowd at lunchtime were enjoying an unusually hot climate.

The day before, a parade with 70 floating and 2,500 participants went through the same area in an annual carnival celebration. The police said that around 250,000 people had participated.
Mannheim, who has a population of about 320,000, was in the front row last year when an Afghan citizen who lived in Germany stabbed people in a far -right event, killing a police officer who had rushed to stop the attack.
After Monday’s events, the nearby city of Heidelberg canceled the celebrations of the Carnival scheduled for Tuesday.
“This is the second time in a year in which our nearby city has undergone such a terrible act of violence – in a situation like this, it was inconceivable for us to celebrate a happy carnival parade here in Heidelberg,” said mayor Eckart Würzner.
